Design Story:
Famous • Barr was a landmark department store chain headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and a significant part of the city's identity for nearly a century. The company was created in 1911 through the merger of The William Barr Dry Goods Co., established in 1850, and The Famous Clothing Store, which opened in 1873. Under the ownership of retailer David May, the merger formed a retail powerhouse.

The store's significance to St. Louis was monumental. In 1913, it opened its flagship location in the newly constructed Railway Exchange Building downtown, becoming the largest department store in the city. This building was a marvel of its time, touted as one of the most spacious office buildings in the world, and Famous-Barr occupied its first seven floors. The store was a pioneer, becoming the first air-conditioned department store in the United States in 1914. More than just a store, it was a destination featuring restaurants, beauty parlors, and a famous children's playroom. The Famous-Barr name was eventually retired in 2006 when all locations were converted to Macy's, and the historic downtown store closed in 2013.
