Design Story: Quite the most profoundly melancholy piece penned by Edgar Allen Poe, The Raven, was written squarely to induce a profound sense of sadness on it's reader. Poe writes about a widower whose lost his wife "Eleanor" and in his distinct grief, speaks to a raven that visits him and repeats the phrase "nevermore". The widower begins the anecdote relatively upbeat, even repeating the phrase "for evermore" but is brought down by the raven's harrowing and conflicting statement. Through this banter back and forth with the raven, the narrator finally accepts that he will never be happy. The publication of "The Raven" in January 1845 made Poe widely popular, although it never brought him much financial success.
